1.

Identify how much time between now and the exam. Divide 200 by the number of weeks. This is your weekly transfer goal: the number of cards you need to master each week (transfer into FLUENCY)

2.

You will create three groups of cards: PREP, PRACTICE, and FLUENCY. Terms will begin in the PREP group, and based on the following requirements, will transfer through the PRACTICE group and end in the FLUENCY group. You will do daily one-minute timings using all terms in the FLUENCY group. This will be graphed on the Standard Celeration Chart (SCC).

3.

To create the first group of cards (PREP), choose 5-10 from the entire deck (at random). The number in this group should informed by your weekly transfer goal but should be no more than 10 at a time. If you need to add more than 10 per week, you will need to increase the number of sessions, not terms in the group. You have created your first PREP group.

4.

Each day you will conduct at least one session that consists of reviewing the PREP group, PRACTICE group, FLUENCY group, and a FLUENCY timing.

5.

Session part 1. Take the stack of PREP terms (remember: no more than 10). Read the word, flip the card, read the definition. Go to the next card in the stack and repeat. Do this with each card until you believe you have learned the definition. Test round: Read the word, and immediately say (aloud) the definition. Flip the card and check your definition. If it is correct, transfer it to the PRACTICE group. If incorrect, read the word and then read the definition (aloud), and it stays and is ready to be used for the next session. Add a new term in the PREP group for each one that transferred to the PRACTICE group.

6.

Session part 2. Take the stack of PRACTICE terms (remember: no more than 10) and shuffle the stack. Test each term by reading the word, saying the definition (aloud), flipping the card and check. If correct, move to FLUENCY group. If incorrect, read the word, read the definition (aloud) and then test again. If a term fails the test twice, transfer back to PREP group.

7.

Session part 3. Take the stack of FLUENCY terms (up to all 200 terms), shuffle them. Test each term by reading the word and saying the definition as fast as possible. Flip and check. If correct, hooray! If wrong, read the word, read the definition (aloud) and transfer the term back to the PRACTICE group. You should move through all the terms as fast as possible.

8.

Session part 4. Conduct a one minute timing in which you take the FLUENCY group and shuffle, then as quickly as possible, read the term, and say (aloud) the definition. If you hesitate, pass on the term (place it in a second pile). When the minute is up, count the number of terms you got correct, and the number in the second (pass) pile, record this as correct and incorrect on the SCC. Your goal should be to get 13-20 correct per minute with no more than 3 mistakes/passes.

9.

As you progress, take data on the number of terms transferred into FLUENCY per session. This is your rate of transfer. If you find you are transferring fewer cards into fluency than your transfer goal you must increase the number of practice sessions.

10.

Based on this, you need to have as many daily practice sessions needed meet the transfer goal, but should complete one daily session at minimum. A wise student will work hard to transfer as many terms as possible each week to maximize exposure to minute timings with all the terms. As you progress, you will graph your rates so that you can identify whether you are on track or need to increase the daily practice sessions.

EXAMPLE

Brian has 18 weeks left until the exam so he calculates his weekly transfer goal: 200/18= Approx. 11. He runs daily sessions and measures the number of cards he moves into the FLUENCY group, and the number of cards he get s correct and incorrect during his 1-minute timing of the FLUENCY group. He finds that although he is able to maintain 13-15 correct on the one-minute timings, over the course of two weeks he was able to transfer 9 cards to the fluency category per week. Because he is not meeting his goal he increases his studying to two sessions per day. After this adjustment he begins to transfer 12 cards to the FLUENCY group.
